PIPE FLOW EXPERT

OVERVIEW:

Pipe flow problems occur in the design of many types of engineering projects. A few of these include refineries (liquid flow), gasoline plants (gas or vapor flow), chemical plants, tank farms, steam plants, cooling towers, domestic water and gas systems, sewers, wells, fire sprinklers, and irrigation systems. The solution to many pipe flow problems in all these cases can be obtained by application of basic procedures.

Pipe Flow Expert Software is used by engineers in over 75 countries worldwide to design energy efficient pumping and piping systems. The Pipe Flow Expert Software is used to Model Pipe Networks and Calculate Flows & Pressure Drops that are critical to understanding fluid flow through pipes, pumps, fittings, and components.

This course presents basic procedures that are used for solving simple pipe flow problems but are also applicable to solutions of more complex cases. These procedures depend on the fluid properties, the type of flow, and the applicable governing equations, energy losses, and the unknown quantities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE / SCOPE:

The goal of this course is to teach the following aspects of analysis of fluid flow in pipes:

*                Awareness of the compressibility and viscosity properties of a fluid;

*                Determine the governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy;

*                Determine applicable isothermal or adiabatic gas laws;

*                Specify the known and unknown pipe flow variables of a problem;

*                Calculation of the Reynolds number;

*                Determine if the flow is laminar or turbulent;

*                Calculation of the acoustic velocity and Mach number;

*                Find the pipe relative roughness;

*                Evaluate the friction factor for laminar or turbulent flow;

*                Calculate the friction head loss due to viscosity;

*                Evaluate minor head loss due to pipe fittings; and

*                Solve the governing equations, include compressibility effects and determine pump size.
